Castor Oil and Rose Hip Seed Oil for Hair Growth and Retention

If you desire to grow your hair long, remember that hair growth and hair retention go hand in hand.

The old adage is that if you cut your hair, it will grow faster. The truth is our hair is always growing.

So if we keep the hair we have from splitting and breaking, frequent trims become unnecessary. Then we can retain, or hold on to, the hair that has grown.

You are reading the words of someone who had shoulder-length hair for over 15 years. Why?

Damaged split ends and dry brittle hair caused my hair to break. This was partly due to chemical processing, heat styling tools, and overall neglect.

With split ends taunting, my stylist trimmed my hair every 6 weeks. It was something that had to be done to prevent further damage.

She trimmed off at least 1 inch, which negated the possible 1” inch of hair I grew over those six weeks.

So there I was…stuck with a length that barely hanged from my shoulders. And then I had the audacity to ask, "Why isn't my hair growing?" Have you been there?

The key to hair growth and retention is finding the right oils and regimen to keep hair (especially the ends of hair) healthy so it does not have to be cut away.

This is where castor oil and rosehip seed oil come into play.

Castor oil is a thicker carrier oil and well-known for stimulating hair growth. It has antibacterial properties and nutrients like vitamin E. I frequently use castor oil by massaging it on my scalp for hair growth.

According to “The Health Site”, the ricinoleic acid and omega-6 essential fatty acids in castor oil accelerate blood circulation to the scalp. This stimulates hair growth. When applying castor oil consistently, my monthly hair growth sometimes doubles. That result also depends on the effectiveness of my entire hair care regimen.

Still, fast growth does not mean longer hair if you are unable to “retain” it. Hair breakage is a huge culprit in preventing long hair growth.

Over time my ends get dry and brittle. The ends of the hair are the oldest part of the hair and need a little extra tender loving care.

For more TLC, I apply castor oil mixed with rosehip seed oil to the ends of my hair after washing. Applying this oil blend to my ends while my hair is wet, helps to seal in moisture and prevent breakage.

For every ounce of castor oil, I add 8 to 10 drops of rose hip seed oil.

Rosehip seed oil is well known for its skin benefits. It is gentle enough to apply directly to the skin. Some even call it a miracle cure for scars, wrinkles, and eczema.

Rosehip oil has been used for hundreds of years for medicinal purposes. According to the “Hair Buddha” web site, rose hip seed oil comes from the hip or berry of the rose plant. The berry of the flower is where the seeds reside.

Rosehip seed oil contains antioxidants and essential nutrients, including vitamins A and C. All are beneficial for reviving healthy hair. Rosehip seed oil can reverse dryness and protect your hair from future breakage.

The Benefits of Both Combined

While castor oil acts as a stimulant to grow my hair at a faster rate, the rose hip seed oil complements by acting as a protectant from dryness and damage.

The impact that this oil blend has on my hair is amazing. Rosehip seed oil is non-greasy and attacks both dryness and damage with moisture.

If you have thin fine hair, you can apply the oil blend, leave on your hair and scalp overnight and wash in the morning. If you have thick coarse hair like mine, you may do well applying this blend as a leave in.

How to store your oil blend

Both essential oils and carrier oils do well if stored in a cool dry area of your home.

Storing the oil in a dark glass container can help extend its shelf life. When ready to use, I transfer my oils to a plastic applicator bottle. I only transfer what I will use for the week, and keep the rest in a cool room.
